Sabu's Story

Sabu comes from the Karunamoyee slum in Kolkata, and grew up facing some truly challenging circumstances. His father, with two marriages, mostly lives with his other wife, leaving Sabu's family neglected. His elder brother works and lives separately from the family, which ultimately leaves Sabu to stay with his struggling mother, who has a very, VERY limited income, as she is illiterate and her only regular income is feeding the dog of a wealthy family. 

Due to that, Sabu's mother couldn't afford to enroll him in school (India does not have free public school systems) so he was left to dropout. 

With nothing productive to do, Sabu fell into the same pattern as many children in his situation: causing chaos. His friend group was rough; they would roam until late at night, behaving extremely abusively towards others and showing disobedience. Moreover, Sabu often went hungry – not-eating-for-days-hungry. To get food, he resorted to street begging.

Worried about his behavior and future, Sabu's mother sought help from SEED to bring him to the Boys Dream Home. She hoped that by staying in the hostel, Sabu could resume his studies and transform into a good, obedient kid with strong moral character.

Admitting Sabu to school was not easy, as he had been a dropout for two years. However, with SEED's efforts, he succeeded! He successfully enrolled in school, and in February 2021, he joined the Boys Dream Home.

What if the Boys Dream Home wasn't there? He would have remained on the same trajectory, and who knows where he would be now. Is his work done? No. The kids in the Dream Homes are not exempt from struggle. But they do have a shot – more than what their peers at home have at the time.
